Grids
Paintings within this series all begin with a graphite grid, which dictates the general direction of each piece. When I first started this body of work, my goal was to make each shape (circle, rectangle) as uniform as possible, in keeping with the rigid structure of the grids. What I found was that, while it was virtually impossible to create perfectly identical shapes, the differences began to seem much more interesting. Almost immediately the individual shapes became as important as the whole and the works began to feel less rigid and more like a community. The shapes seemed to have character, personality, and I used that to guide decisions and “build relationships” both within single pieces and throughout the series. As much as these works are about the harmony that exists between the ordered and organic, they are just as much about balance and individuality. As such, these pieces are meant to be displayed in any orientation and gallerists and collectors are encouraged to hang pieces in whichever way delights them.
