Gravity
This body of work is highly process driven and intuitive. I begin every painting with a distinct graphite border but beyond that each piece unfolds naturally, building on prior works. Instead of paintbrushes I use wooden barbeque skewers and chopsticks, which provide control and consistency. The pace of this kind of mark making is sometimes tedious but most often meditative. It allows me time to let the materials and the work inform me as I paint. This series presents an opportunity to contemplate the tension between the organized and the organic and, to try to find the order in disorder (or the disorder within order), and to observe the interplay between the parts and the whole. In a world increasingly fast paced and chaotic, it can be difficult to feel grounded, to feel like our existence matters. This series invites viewers to sit in the space of discomfort, of unknowns, and try to find their place within it.
